International cooperation
Article 7 of the International Treaty directs international cooperation towards establishing and strengthening developing country capabilities with respect both to conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA. Substantial gaps, indeed complete absence of such activities in some countries demands that new initiatives such as Diverseeds be implemented. Regional and subregional PGRFA networks do exist or are being established (PGRNs in South and East Asia, RECSEA in Southeast Asia), but are generally underfunded and therefore limited in their capability. Capacity building, even where networks already exist will be extremely important. Many of the most effective and well established networks operate within Europe (ECPGR, EUFORGEN, PGR Forum, EURISCO) and it is imperative that in order to address the requirements of Article 7 of the International Treaty, these Networks provide assistance and act as models for newly developing networks in other parts of the world.Previous page: Inventory and collections
