Inventory and collections: Article 6.2 (b) refers to ‘strengthening research which enhances and conserves biological diversity by maximising intra- and inter-specific variation for the benefit of farmers…’. Before this can happen, there needs to be greater knowledge of what diversity currently exists and why farmers may or may not continue to use it. Diverseeds will be able to spread to target regions ‘best practice’ in terms of how to develop inventories and databases of minor crops, landraces and crop wild relatives and their uses.
Additionally, this provides a means of making available broad genetic diversity to farmers (Article 6.2 d, e and f), particularly if they have sustained loss of diversity. Of equal importance will be the facilitation of the collection of PGRFA (Article 5.1 (b, d and e)).
